St. Augustine (354–430) was born in North Africa to St. Monica, a devout Christian, and Patricius, a pagan official. As a young man, Augustine pursued worldly pleasures, intellectual pride, and a restless search for truth. For years he was drawn to the Manichaean sect and then to Neoplatonism, but he remained unsatisfied. His conversion began through the prayers of his mother, the preaching of St. Ambrose, and his own deep encounter with Scripture.
Baptized at the age of 32 by Ambrose, Augustine went on to become Bishop of Hippo. He became one of the greatest Doctors of the Church, penning works such as Confessions, which details his restless search for God, and The City of God, which defended Christianity against pagan critics. Augustine’s legacy endures as a giant of Catholic theology, shaping teachings on grace, sin, and the nature of the Church.
Today we pray for all who feel restless or lost in the world, that they may find peace in God, who alone satisfies the human heart. May his example encourage us to seek truth with humility and perseverance.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Renew in your Church, we pray, O Lord,
the spirit with which you endowed your Bishop St. Augustine,
that, filled with the same spirit, we may thirst for you,
the sole fountain of true wisdom,
and seek you, the author of heavenly love.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
Saint Augustine of Hippo, pray for us.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
