Saints Cosmas and Damian are twin brothers who lived in the 3rd century and became legendary for their healing skills and unwavering faith.

They were “unmercenary” physicians, which means they practiced medicine without accepting payment. This generosity was a theological witness that the healing was a gift from God, not a commodity. They were able to spread their faith through their profession.

Cosmas and Damian survived multiple tortures before their martyrdom. After miraculously surviving each brutal torture thrown at them, they were beheaded. Their endurance became a sign of spiritual resilience.

The twins had three brothers that are often overlooked but were martyred with them. Their names are Anthimus, Leontius, and Euprepius. This makes the story not just about the twins, but also about a whole family of martyrs.

After their death, they were buried in Cyrrhus (modern-day Syria), and their tomb became a pilgrimage site known for miraculous healings. Few saints are mentioned by name in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I), but Cosmas and Damian are among them—highlighting their early and enduring importance in the Church.

Today we pray for all who offer healing without seeking a reward that they might be strengthened by grace and guided by compassion. May their hearts be renewed in the image of Christ, the true physician of souls.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God of mercy,
you raised up Cosmas and Damian
to heal the sick without payment,
to serve without pride,
and to suffer without fear.

Make us bold in compassion.
Let our hands bring comfort, not judgment.
Let our gifts be shared freely,
not hoarded or withheld.

When the world wounds us for doing good,
remind us of the twins who endured every blow
and still chose love.

May we be healers in spirit,
even if we hold no medicine—
offering presence, patience, and peace
to those who ache.

Through their witness,
teach us that mercy is never wasted,
and that every act of healing
echoes Your own.

Amen.

Saints Cosmas and Damian, pray for us.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
