Saint Jean-Gabriel Perboyre was the eldest sibling of eight children. His French family was very holy, and a grand total of five of them became religious. Despite this, Jean-Gabriel did not have strong inclinations to the religious life but still accompanied his younger brother Louis to seminary. There, he was unexpectedly awakened to his own vocation.
Jean-Gabriel longed to be a missionary in China, but he was held back by his poor health. Unfortunately, Louis died on his way to China, so Jean-Gabriel had the opportunity to take his place, which he did. He arrived in China and served as a teacher and missionary, known for his humility and charity.
In 1839, he was arrested by anti-Christian persecutors and was tortured and executed by strangulation on a cross. Before dying, he wrote, “Lord, my God, I accept at thy hands willingly and with submission the kind of death it may please thee to send me this day.” This was a testament to his surrender and peace, thus dubbing him the patron saint of China and Chinese martyrs.
Today, we pray for all those who have suffered violence, especially the victims of the September 11 attacks and their families. May Saint Jean-Gabriel’s witness remind us that even in the face of cruelty and terror, love endures, and faith can be a light in the darkest places.
We pray for all who serve in hidden or dangerous missions—first responders, missionaries, caregivers, and peacekeepers. May they be strengthened by the courage of Saint Jean-Gabriel, who bore suffering with grace and never abandoned his call to love.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
God of mercy,
on this day we remember Saint Jean-Gabriel Perboyre,
who bore suffering with quiet courage,
and we hold in prayer all who have faced violence, terror, and loss.
We remember the lives lost on September 11,
the families who still carry grief,
and the responders who ran toward danger with hearts full of service.
May their witness, like Jean-Gabriel’s,
remind us that love is stronger than fear,
and that fidelity—whether lived in silence or sacrifice—
is never forgotten by You.
Strengthen those who serve in hidden places.
Console those who mourn.
And teach us to carry one another with grace,
especially when the world feels heavy.
Amen.
Saint Jean-Gabriel, pray for us.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Tomorrow is the Feast of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
