Saint John Chrysostom was born in Antioch in the fourth century and became one of the greatest preachers and theologians in the history of the Church. Given the title “Chrysostom,” which means “golden-mouthed,” he was famous for his eloquent, direct, and deeply passionate sermons that brought the Scriptures to life for everyday people.

Despite his desire for a quiet monastic life, he was appointed Archbishop of Constantinople. There, he boldly spoke out against corruption, defended the poor, and called both the rich and the clergy to live true Christian lives of justice and charity. His fearless preaching earned him powerful enemies, including the imperial court, leading to his exile. He died in exile in 407, but his legacy endures as a Doctor of the Church and one of the early Church Fathers.

Today, we pray for all preachers, teachers, writers, and leaders called to speak truth in the world. May Saint John’s example inspire us to speak with courage, integrity, and love, even when standing up for justice comes at a personal cost.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God of truth and justice,
You granted Saint John Chrysostom extraordinary eloquence and the courage to proclaim Your Word without compromise.
Grant us the grace to listen deeply to Your Gospel and the boldness to speak up for righteousness in our time.
Fill our words with grace and our actions with charity.
When we are tempted to remain silent in the face of wrong, strengthen us with the fortitude of Your Holy Spirit.
Help us to see Your face in the poor, the suffering, and the forgotten, and teach us to serve them with joyful and generous hearts.
Amen.

Saint John Chrystostom, pray for us.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
