September 22 – Saint Maurice and the Martyrs of the Theban Legion

St. Maurice was a Roman soldier and commander of the Theban Legion, a unit of Christian soldiers from Egypt. Around the year 286 AD, Emperor Maximian ordered the legion to march to Gaul to suppress a rebellion. When Maurice and his men were commanded to persecute fellow Christians and offer sacrifices to pagan gods, they refused.

Their loyalty to Christ led to brutal consequences: the emperor ordered the decimation of the legion—executing one in every ten men—repeatedly, until the entire legion was martyred at Agaunum, in present-day Switzerland.

Maurice’s witness became a powerful symbol of conscience, courage, and fidelity to faith. He is especially honored in Switzerland, northern Italy, and by the Vatican’s Swiss Guard, of whom he is the patron saint.

Today, we pray for those who face moral conflict in their work or service. May they be strengthened by the witness of St. Maurice and his companions, who stood firm in faith even when it cost them everything. We pray for courage rooted in love, for integrity that holds fast under pressure, and for the grace to follow Christ wherever He leads.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

St. Maurice,
You stood firm when the cost was high,
choosing faith over fear, conscience over command.
You led your brothers not into battle,
but into witness—quiet, resolute, and true.

Pray for us when we face pressure to compromise.
Intercede for those in service,
who must choose between duty and conviction.
Help us to be brave in small ways,
faithful in hidden places,
and willing to follow Christ, even when the path is costly.

May your courage echo in our hearts,
and may your loyalty to Christ inspire ours.
Amen.

Saint Maurice and the Martyrs of the Theban Legion, pray for us.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
