On September 2, the Church honors Blessed André Grasset, a Canadian priest and martyr who stood firm in his faith during the French Revolution.
Born in Montreal in 1758, André was ordained in Paris in 1783. When the Revolution erupted, priests were pressured to swear allegiance to the state over the Pope. André refused. He was imprisoned with 95 other priests in a former convent and, despite threats and insults, remained calm and united with his fellow clergy. All 96 were executed for their defiance.
His witness is a powerful reflection of Christ’s teaching: “If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other also.” (Matthew 5:39). His feast day invites us to consider how we respond to injustice—with vengeance or with grace.
Today, we pray for those who feel pressured to compromise their integrity—whether in faith, work, or relationships. May they find the strength to stand firm with grace, like Blessed André, even when the cost is high. We especially lift up priests, religious, and lay leaders who face hostility or misunderstanding for living the Gospel with conviction.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Lord God of mercy and truth,
You gave Blessed André Grasset a heart that would not bend
to fear or falsehood.
In the silence of his prison and the chaos of his time,
he chose You—calmly, faithfully, without bitterness.
Give us that same quiet courage.
When we are tempted to take the easier path,
remind us of André’s peace.
When we are mocked or misunderstood,
teach us to respond with dignity, not resentment.
Let our witness be gentle but firm,
rooted not in pride, but in love.
And may we never forget that holiness often looks like
a quiet “yes” in the face of loud opposition.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Tomorrow’s saint of the day is Saint Gregory the Great.
